Spalted Maple

Working on this piece has been a time of much enjoyment as I am now seeing the realization of much work coming into blossom.

Originally I cut a large maple down about five years ago and decided to save some of the trunk. The drying out process of wood can be quite long, sometimes spanning years which means developing the habit of patience and being able to see into the future. After cutting the trunk into two lengths I set them aside to weather in the elements of the seasons. Last spring I crosscut a few pieces off of one trunk to see how the drying was progressing and was much delighted to see that the wood had spalted. I am now planning on cutting some slabs out length wise so as to make some table tops.

I will be posting more pictures and details of the top and adjoining base in the coming days while also giving details as to the construction and finish.
